It is tough to tell unadulterated honey from a diluted one because the difference can’t be seen by just looking at it.
Due to its enormous health benefits, it is used as a substitute for sugar by persons with cholesterol levels. Honey is rich in antioxidants, lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol, and promotes burn and wound healing.
Pearl is the CEO of Golden Pearl Honey. She shares with SVTV Africa four ways to tell pure honey from diluted one.
“If you want to test if this honey is pure, just heap dry sand and drop a little amount of honey onto it. If the sand soaks up the honey, it is mixed with water and sugar. However, if it is pure, it would not mix with the sand and can even be separated from the sand,” Pearl revealed.
She goes on to disclose two other methods of testing for fake honey.
“The second test is done with a gas of water, cold or warm. Just pour a small amount of the honey into the glass. The diluted honey will mix with the water immediately, but the pure one will quickly settle at the bottom of the glass.
You can use a white sheet of paper. Drop a little amount onto the paper and spread it gently. Now turn the paper to check if it is wet. If the honey makes the paper wet, it means it is diluted,” she told DJ Nyaami.
Lastly, the final method is to put the honey in a refrigerator for an hour or so. The pure one would become thicker than before and needs to settle before pouring.
