Musician Unda of R2Bees fame says no musician in Ghana has the right to say he is the originator of the popular Ghanaian music genre, ‘Azonto.’
According to the artist who featured on R2Bees’s ‘I Dey Mad’ hit track, he discovered it and he can proof beyond reasonable doubt that he birthed it in 2007.
He made this known in interview with host DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa when asked where he got the name Azonto from. “I released a song featuring Yaw Siki, and in that song I mention Azonto in it several times. The song was a hit in Tema and some parts of Accra and that was in 2007.
The song was officially added to R2Bees’s Revelation album in 2009.”
“Honestly, the term Azonto was generated from a food called Zontorie – it’s a disgusting food for prisoners. It’s a term we normally use in Tema especially among the guys. So that’s how come Azonto came about and I later went to Kill Beatz to record the song named Azonto.
So Gasmilla and rapper Sarkodie doesn’t have the right to say they gave birth to the popular music genre, Azonto.” Unda added.
Unda explained that in as much as Azonto has been around for a long time, he is the first musician to have commercialized that dance before the likes of Lil Win, Fuse ODG and Sarkodie helped to push Azonto worldwide.
Meanwhile, Unda now known as Kojo Golden said, initially, he never wanted to take credit for the genre because “I wanted it to be a Ghanaian thing and I don’t want to own it. So no one should wake up and make people feel they are the owners.”
Sarkodie however has clarified that he never branded himself as the Azonto King as some artists and fans have started peddling about him since he started the ‘Bring Back Azonto’ campaign.
This placed the rapper in an awkward situation hence putting a hold on his initiative for the
mean time.
