Rapper E.L has taken a swipe at musicians who are claiming to be the owners of music genre Azonto, adding that the genre was originated by a group of people and therefore does not belong to a single individual.
Several musicians including Gasmilla and Stay Jay over the years have claimed to be the owner/originators of the Azonto genre which was very popular in the country from 2010-2015.
However, according to the ‘U’go Kill Me’ hitmaker, music genres are created from the culture in which it operates and since there is no owner of rap, highlife, afrobeat and other genres, nobody can lay claim to Azonto.
In an interview with Caleb Nii Boye on Live FM’s showbiz program, he said “But why does someone want to own Azonto? Why should we have a landlord for something that was created for Ghanaians”
“I don’t think anybody can sit somewhere and stage a claim to a music genre. Nobody created Hip Pop, Afrobeats, Highlife and the same applies to Azonto because it comes from culture, “he added.
